Yellow Mountain Imports has Japanese Mahjong sets back in stock! True Riichi sets, including red fives, blank Haku's (no borders on the white dragons), the right number of point sticks, and an East/South tessera.
Tile size is about standard, listing says tiles are 1-1/16'' H x 13/16'' W x 5/8'' Thick (27mm x 20mm x 16mm).  Should be able to perform wall lift easily with these!

They have them in both black tiles ($55) and white tiles ($49).

The best thing? Yellow Mountain is an importer located here in the US. Which means…. affordable shipping rates! Only $7 shipping from their Amazon Marketplace store:

Or visit their website directly:

We own a similar set from Yellow Mountain and love it.

Yellow Mountain also has solid customer service.

Thanks, noticed they didn't have anything in the Japanese MahJong section a few weeks ago and, was disappointed. Some of my group's players wanted to pick up a set and, I've always liked YMI.

We actually got a set of the white tiles in a few days ago and they're really great!  Charlyn will be posting a more thorough review in the future, but as for initial impressions they're very readable and comfortable to physically work with.  The only problem we've encountered is that it didn't seem to come with the proper denominations of points, but hopefully we can get an answer from YMI soon as to what's going on.

I don't know how long they've been up, but YMI are listing two nice new Japanese sets - one white, one black - and have cut the price on the old ones too.

Judging by the quoted dimensions, the new sets are different to the ones Charlyn posted about above. The tiles look good - the markings look pretty much identical to my Japanese import Sango set. The accessories are all different though.

Their system is quoting me under US$60 including shipping to NYC!

(due credit to Gg on the reachmahjong.com forum for spotting these and posting about them there)

Wow, these new sets actually LOOK Japanese unlike their previous riichi offerings which had a distinctly Chinese style design on the pin suit. I may just have to buy one of these.

Hello all. And yea actually right before I found this forum I stumbled across the mahjong sets on yellow mountain and was thinking about picking up a black tile set. After readin this thread I just went ahead and did it. BTW, on Amazon both the white and black tile sets seem to be going for 44.99 fwiw. Been only playing online up until now, so I look forward to actually practice moving the tiles and teaching my girlfriend in real life.

Denomination of points?  Does this mean that the distribution of scoring sticks is incorrect for Riichi?  Good to know that the sets approximate the Japanese sets which are typically made in China (perhaps not the Sango sets, but my Take set was made in China apparently for the Japanese market.)  My Take set cost me $140.00 delivered to Texas, so its great the YMI is offering something that will serve the purpose at half the price!
