Hello All.

I was wondering if there were any Mahjong players in Florida. I currently run Riichi Mahjong on Saturdays at my local card shop in Crestview with a few of my friends. I would not mind any information of other places to play near me or information to help other get started in the game.

Ryuusei,

I live in Orlando and love playing riichi mahjong. I have taught my gaming buddies the basics but they don't have any interest into delving into an intricate scoring system such as riichi.

I just recently joined Janryumon and have been enjoying playing on that software, even though i don't speak japanese :(. Im slowly learning…i can read hirigana well enough now.

Its a shame we live roughly 2 hours away, its awesome that you have a regular meetup.

We usually get 4-6 people to show up on Saturdays. Most of the regular players know about the fan requirement and what hands to make. This Saturday, I am going to show them how to count their minipoints. I usually count them up for them. I try to play games during the week when I can to get more players interested. I usually keep the rules simple, they just need to make the 4 melds and the pair or 7 pairs. Then I slowly introduce the hands and the scoring. We do have a couple of conventions close to my area, and looking at the suggestions on this site, I might try to host a panel and get some game room time.

@boardergame4life: I've been playing on Janryumon online, too. The app on the Ipad got me started into playing Riichi style since December. It is good to hear that there is another Riichi group in FL. If you want to make the drive and meet our group let me know and we can play some games!

1. Which Ipad app do you use?
2. I'll definetly keep that in mind if i feel like going on a road trip!

3. A board game convention that just recently passed in Jacksonville would be a great place to host a demo. its called Rapier con. Its a awesome group of people that love european style board games and im sure they wouldn't mind. I'd bet some of them have already heard of the game too. The convention usually brings in about 300 people i believe. i have been personally twice in the last 3 years ('10,'11).

4. Also Dragon con in Atlanta would be a great convention to try to gather support. HUGE anime/gaming/everything geek convention.
