Our first open play event will be held at:
Simple Studios 134 W. 29th Street (b/t 6th and 7th) 2nd Floor New York, NY 10001 Map to Location The event will be from 3PM to 7PM, please disregard any other time information you might see as we're having some timezone issues with the webserver. This event is geared towards players who are already familiar enough with Riichi Mahjong to sit down at a table and start playing without any instruction. Please use this thread to ask any questions you may have, and to RSVP for the event. We'll try to get space for as many people as possible, but the more people RSVP the better we'll be able to make that estimate. Download rules/scoring reference here The major rules we'll be using are as follows:

I would like to ask about your definition of experienced players.
For example, I have not fully memorized fu values (although I've memorized almost everything else), mostly because much of my riichi playing is online. However, I do have experience playing in real life. Should I wait for events for less experienced players, or would I be not considered too much of a liability in this one? |

Not a liability at all! Needing an extra minute or two for scoring is no problem - if you're able to play online comfortably you should be just fine. We're still working on our instructional materials, so we're not quite prepared to teach people who are unfamiliar with the game how to play. However, anyone who doesn't feel like they'd need instruction in order to play effectively has already made it over our "experience" bar for this event |

You know I'll be there. My dream of hitting Nine Gates lives on.
And I don't know fu values either! |

I'm so happy that this is happening! Sorry I can't be there but hopefully I can help out from over here. I think I might be able to get an interesting prize for the winner…

I intend to show up, too.
I could use some practice on waits, furiten, etc., without a computer to help me. Some questions:

Currently we're planning on bringing several mahjong tables, so there should be proper playing surfaces for everyone. We should have at least three tables available for play, more likely four. As for tiles, most of our sets are unnumbered but we can bring our numbered set as well if you'd be more comfortable using one.
That's the plan
We will be providing beverages and some snacks, and since we're going to be ending around 7PM there are strong odds of a dinner excursion afterwards. |

How many red fives?
What about weird yaku like daisharin, hyakumangoku, etc.? (Hyakumangoku is quite unusual in that its definition invokes an arithmetic operation.) |

We're working with an interim ruleset right now as we draft our formal rules. They're most similar to the JPML B rules as described on reachmahjong.com, I went over them in this post. This means no red fives, and neither of those yakuman. We're going to be putting together a rulesheet to describe our interim rules within the next few days so I'll be able to post them here for people to browse. The official ruleset should be being drafted soon, and we're looking to get a lot of input to help build the best rules possible. |

Hi Jackie, We'll be posting a rule sheet for this event shortly, but until then the rules we'll be playing with are outlined in this post. If you're comfortable with these rules, then you should be good to go! |

Hello,
I know the rules, and can play online, but like some of the others I'm a bit iffy on scoring (I can bring a cheat sheet). I also know most of the Yaku, but not necessarily all the proper Japanese names for them.. If I still pass the experience test I'd love to come and play. I do have two of the "Junk Mats" with sets of tiles if you'd like me to bring them, though the mats need tables to be set up on. Thanks! David Willems |
